Access to Free Period Products Consultation
Purpose of Engagement
When Scotland became the first country in the world to make period products free for everyone in 2021, local authorities were required to carry out consultations with local communities. This was in order to find out: where people would like products to be made available; how people would like to obtain them and the type of products that may be preferred.
What was the desired outcome?
That everyone in Shetland who may need to access period products can obtain them free of charge as and when they are required.
What was already known?
The Council had been providing free access to period products for anyone who menstruates and attends a school in Shetland or who is Home Educated since 2018, as well as in some community venues, therefore some provision was already in place.
