Access to Free Period Products Consultation
Method, Participation and Barriers
Method of Engagement and Reason Chosen
In May and June 2022, a survey was carried out. This was so that:
- data could be gathered in standardised format;
- to ensure a wide range of people were included;
- and so that results could be generalised to the local community
It was important to have as many responses as possible to gather the views of anyone who uses sanitary products, who may use them in the future, and those who collect them on behalf of others.
Participants and Promotion
The consultation was open to any member of the public regardless of gender, age or menstruating status. The survey was available online and paper copies were also available. The survey was promoted via local radio, press, social media, and circulated widely via community groups.

Overcoming any Barriers to Participation
It was recognised that there are people in the community who may require support to participate in the consultation. Ability Shetland, who support the efforts of disabled people in Shetland to realise their full potential in all areas of life, helped with and promoted the survey. The Community Development team were also available to help where required.
