Method of Engagement and Reason Chosen

Public information communications campaigns were agreed by Shetland Islands Council due to the purpose being centred on informing the public of the support available. The Council contracted social enterprise Greater Good Comms Ltd to support them with their communications due to their expertise in the sector, and ability to provide dedicated time to the campaign.

The campaigns included social media; local media outlets such as radio, news websites, and newspapers; a leaflet mail drop; a campaign film; and posters. Information was shared on the Council intranet and with partners, including leisure centres, health settings, schools, community groups, and the third sector, to disseminate. Messaging was linked back to a Cost of Living homepage on the Shetland Islands Council website, which included a wealth of information, including a phone number for general support.

Participants

It was hoped that the campaign would reach those who felt the detrimental impact of the cost of living pressure on their dignity, security and/or wellbeing. The campaign also aimed to ensure that front line workers knew about support available that they could share and begin conversations where required.

Overcoming any Barriers to Participation

To ensure non-stigmatising communications, workshops were held with front line services where expertise on what would resonate in the community was gathered. Learning was taken from the Each and Every Child initiative to ensure language was friendly and information was relatable. Conversations with families on draft messaging also took place.
