Bressay Newsletter

Key Lessons and Feeding Back

Key Lessons

  • The newsletter is a lot of work. Having BDL and development officers to manage the creation and output (rather than solely relying on volunteers) has helped the production.
  • Having multiple drafts and taking the time to double check everything is important to make sure there are no errors, and the final document is of a high quality.
  • Having a few people that can proofread the newsletter is helpful for avoiding mistakes.
  • It is important to be careful when figuring out what to focus on and draw people’s attention to.
  • It is kept to four editions a year because of the time and resources needed to produce it, but to still give an appropriate amount of time between editions to gather a range of material to keep the newsletter interesting, varied and relevant.
  • It is important to seek out information that should be included and invite contributions.
  • BDL are aware the newsletter has been really appreciated by older folk who can't get out much as a way of keeping in touch with what's going on.

Feeding Back the Results

BDL have an open-door policy and encourage people to come and speak to them about the newsletter. They also encourage feedback and may consider adding a reader’s feedback section at some point in the future.

This type of engagement is to inform and involve. The newsletter was created to be a source of information for the community and wider public, as well as involving the community in sharing pride for their area.
