Bressay Newsletter

Method, Participation and Barriers

Method of Engagement and Reason Chosen

A newsletter was suggested by community members, and it was thought it would help wake people’s curiosity by showing what Bressay has to offer and prompt people to get involved. This could lead to a more connected community and aid in creating positive community spirit. The format of a newsletter was thought to be an effective option for a number of reasons. It would be created in-house and centrally at Speldiburn, where a lot of the islands’ activity takes place, making it easier to capture what is happening. It would also be an effective way of advertising important updates like core activities and club dates all in one document. The physical format of the newsletter as a printed document is important because so many things are only now available online. The paper format makes it more accessible because many struggle with technology or would prefer to have a physical copy. There is also an online version at News | Bressay.org  to make it widely accessible and for those who prefer to access reading materials in a digital format. Locals also have the opportunity to feel that they have some autonomy over what is shared about their area by contributing their own pieces. The inclusion of photos makes the newsletter a visually appealing document, and it also offers a platform for creative activities happening on the island.

Participants and Promotion

The newsletter is mainly created by the BDL’s development officers, but locals are also invited to get involved and put forward pieces to be included. Volunteers support the team by proofreading the newsletters prior to publication and helping with printing and folding. A printed copy is delivered to each household on the island and a digital copy is uploaded to the website. Once published, Speldiburn and the local shop have a number of hard copies available to further help distribution. BDL will also put out a post on their Facebook page to let people know that there is a new edition.

Overcoming any Barriers to Participation

Due to the newsletter being distributed to every house, available online (and can be sent in an email, upon request), it is hoped that everyone on the island will receive a copy. Although there have been no requests, BDL are also able to provide large print copies for anyone who requires one.
