Introducing - Matt Mason
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) are committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the people of Scotland. Alongside preventing and controlling fires, they respond to many different emergency incidents to help keep our communities safe. SFRS work with key partners to deliver fire safety messages and create safer communities. The values they live and work by include: safety, teamwork, respect and innovation. Their mission is to work together for a safer Scotland. In doing so, they can help reduce the instance of fire and play a key role in the safety and wellbeing of the people of Scotland.
The SFRS is the national fire and rescue service of Scotland, formed from the merger of eight regional services in 2013. It's the largest fire and rescue service in the UK and the fourth-largest globally. Our Shetland communities are served by on-call stations and crewed by part-time staff who respond to station when required. Their stations are supported by a team which includes trained prevention and fire safety specialists working together to ensure that Shetland is a safe place to live, work and visit.
SFRS have a proud history of serving their communities and have always worked hard to keep people safe. The role of the firefighter has evolved over time and SRFS want to build on this success to be a modern fire and rescue service that is ready for the challenges of Scotland’s future.
Their Long Term Vision outlines that SRFS want to do more for our communities – not just by responding to incidents but by stopping them from happening in the first place. Find out more about Scottish Fire and Resuce Service on their website.
Matt Mason, Group Commander - Shetland
Matt has been the Group Commander for Shetland since June 2018, having previously worked for Devon and Somerset Fire Rescue Service. He believes the Partnership can best serve the community by placing its needs at the heart of their work and ensuring that partners fully understand these needs. It's about bringing the aspirations of their Plan to life.
In the next three years, Matt hopes to see communities become more resilient and capable of overcoming the challenges they encounter. He believes the Partnership's greatest strength is using everyone's unique skills, knowledge and experience to work together, making Shetland a safer place to live, work, and visit.
