Local nature conservation sites (LNCS) Identified by Shetland Islands Council as having biodiversity and/or geodiversity features of interest significant at a Shetland level. LNCS are not statutory designations but receive protection through planning policy. They help to highlight sites with important natural heritage to developers and the Council. Sites of special scientific interest Sites of special scientific interest (SSSIs) are designated under the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981) as amended by the Nature Conservation (Scotland) Act 2004. Sits are designated due to the presence of important flora, fauna, geological or geomorphological features (or a combination of these features), many are also designated as European sites.
