Locality Profile Meetings

Method, Participation and Barriers

Method of Engagement and Reason Chosen

The Community Planning and Development team were already planning Community Council consultations in each of the seven localities. Given that the locality profiles also had to be taken to each locality for feedback; alongside the fact that members of community groups are mostly volunteers, it made sense to tie this in to avoid having multiple events. It was also efficient in terms of venue hire and staff time. While the Community Council sessions were public drop-ins over four hours, the locality profile discussions were invite only roundtables with Community Development groups and Community Councils, lasting one hour. This enabled open and honest conversations with those who have a vested interest in each locality. The meetings were facilitated, with a few prompt questions. People around the table had a chance to view and read the profiles, ask questions and make comments. This meant the conversation could be opened up and when any questions were asked, answers could be given straight away.

Participants

Invitations were extended to Community Council members and Community Development organisations via email. Community Planning team members attended the roundtable discussion, including Community Workers and those familiar with the data, alongside a member of Shetland Partnership’s Management team.

Overcoming any Barriers to Participation

The main potential barrier was low attendance. To overcome this, additional communication was carried out by Community Workers who already had relationships with Community Councils and Community Development organisations.
