Understanding the Support Needs of those with a Learning Disability

Maximising Impact with Limited Capacity

It is known that people with a Learning Disability may experience inequalities in all areas of their lives, simply because of who they are. NHS Shetland's Learning Disability Nursing service looks beyond day-to-day health and care support to try and upskill the system in Shetland to minimise the impact of these inequalities.

Bespoke training has been designed and delivered to local partners including Police, Ambulance and Fire Service teams to help them respond more effectively to people with Learning Disabilities.

This training has been very well received and was requested by Ambulance and Fire colleagues after seeing the impact on Police.

Local carers and families report a positive and helpful change in attitude and approach from the Police following training, meaning challenging situations are dealt with more effectively and appropriately with less negative impact on everyone involved.

This contributes to Shetland Parntership’s ‘People’ priority, and aiming to make Shetland a safe and happy place, with more people feeling connected to their communities and benefitting from living in good places.
