NatureScot - Juan Brown
NatureScot
NatureScot is Scotland’s nature agency. They work to improve the natural environment in Scotland and inspire everyone to care more about it so that all nature in Scotland is maintained, enhanced and brings us benefits.
NatureScot’s work in Shetland includes advising regulatory authorities on nature and monitoring protected areas. They manage two National Nature Reserves (Hermaness and Noss), a Nature Reserve (Keen of Hamar), and are part of the Shetland Climate Change Strategy working group. Two Peatland Action officers are also based in Shetland, helping to deliver projects supported by this NatureScot fund.
Within the Shetland Partnership Network, NatureScot have a particular role in advising on how nature can contribute to partnership outcomes.

Juan Brown, Operations Officer
Juan believes the partnership can best serve the community by joining-up service delivery and working efficiently towards common outcomes.
In 3 years’ time, Juan would like to see a number of things achieved through the partnership, including progress being made towards developing and embedding nature-based solutions to the climate emergency and biodiversity. He would particularly like to see a significant step-up in restoration of our degraded peatlands, currently by far the single largest emitter of greenhouse gases in Shetland. Juan also is keen to champion how nature contributes to wider outcomes such as health, reducing inequalities and improving overall quality of life.
The greatest strength of the partnership is seeing how everyone’s work fits into ‘the bigger picture’ and how shared outcomes can be delivered more efficiently, at a wider scale.
