Skills Development Scotland

Skills Development Scotland is the national skills body supporting the people of Scotland to develop and apply their skills to build their career management skills from school, into further learning opportunities and employment.  Support is accessible by all pupils, however, those who need it most are targeted for intensive coaching support. They support people at all stages of their careers, so that they are well-placed to take up opportunities arising within the economy.

They also work with employers and employer groups on a national, sectoral, regional, local and individual basis to help them recognise and articulate their current and future skills needs in the short, medium and longer term.

Within Shetland they help people obtain apprenticeships, support those dealing with redundancy, help school pupils consider their future work options, invest money into the local area and deliver a range of advice and guidance sessions.

As part of the Partnership, Skills Development Scotland can provide information on the current employment situation and economic outlook within Shetland specifically, and Scotland more broadly. They can also connect with other organisations within the partnership around employment opportunities and upcoming plans and projects.

Anthony Standing, Head of Operations for North Region

Anthony advocates for action, empathy, and collaboration; and believes in rolling up our sleeves and getting things done. As active listeners, we tune into community needs while leveraging the wealth of data and intelligence generated by our partner organisations. Our communication needs to be transparent, and we celebrate progress—building confidence and support within the community. He hopes our impact is felt where it matters most: in the areas the community deems top priorities.

Anthony’s unwavering goal is to empower individuals and communities to realise their full potential. In three years, he envisions a landscape where opportunities abound and communities/individuals are actively taking them, where community planning and collaboration between public and third sectors create a ripple effect of growth. Prosperity, health, and well-being flourish as we work hand in hand.

“Collaboration is our superpower. Within the partnership, we take ownership, tackle challenges head-on, and find solutions. Curiosity fuels our hunger for knowledge, and we learn from one another. Together, we’re an unstoppable force, weaving a tapestry of positive change.”
