Fair Food

What was the Project

The Fair Food Project aimed to move Shetland towards being an Equitable Food Community. This means a community able to access affordable, healthy and environmentally sound food. This included improving access to land for growing food; helping create opportunities for people to grow their own food; and supporting the increase of skills and knowledge in growing, cooking and eating healthy food.

There are many reasons why increasing opportunities for people to grow their own food is a good thing, including:

  • Reduction in household costs, particularly in Shetland where imported food costs are high
  • Health and wellbeing benefits
  • An opportunity to reduce carbon emissions and support biodiversity.

The Fair Food Project was part of the “money” priority of Shetland's Partnership Plan. A key aim was that:

“Communities will be empowered to provide innovative solutions and support to help people maximise their incomes and minimise their outgoings from the support available.”

The Project aimed to:

  • Reduce the demand for food bank usage
  • Increase growing in communities and by individuals
