Climate-Conscious Shetland

Climate Conscious Shetland brings together partners, sectors, and communities across the isles to accelerate Shetland’s transition to a climate-resilient, low-emissions future.  The work is driven by the Shetland Climate Change Strategy and Implementation Plan, which outlines key actions needed to reduce emissions, restore nature, and ensure Shetland is prepared for the effects of climate change.

The Strategy recognises Shetland’s unique emissions profile – including contributions from land use and industry – and sets out a place-based, data-led, and people-focused approach to achieving net zero.  This means acknowledging our distinctive challenges while acting ambitiously and fairly across sectors.

We want to achieve:

  • Accelerated Climate Action
  • Increased collaboration across organisations
  • Increased effciencies across organisations
  • Reduced duplication of effort
  • Stimulate increased investment
  • Implement projects that improve social, economic and environmental benefits to the Shetland community.

Recent progress includes identifying local climate risks such as increased storms, flooding and ocean acidification, and building these into planning; developing priorities across key themes – energy, transport, waste, business and industry, buildings and land; strengthening partnership collaboration to reduce duplication, stimulate investment and embed climate action across strategies; and piloting practical actions such as energy efficiency retrofit, electric bus and local car-club initiatives, and renewable energy feasibility work.  These actions have also supported greater climate literacy and community engagement.

Delivering on:

Shetland Climate Change Strategy, Net Zero Route Maps, Local Development Plan, Population Health Framework, National Just Transition Plans, National Planning Framework 4, Regional Transport Strategy, Adaptation Scotland priorities, Zero Waste Scotland priorities, NatureScot priorities, Islands Plan, Scottish Biodiversity Strategy, and more.

Delivered through:

  • Shetland Climate Change Strategy – A coordinated partnership response developed through workshops, logic modelling and community engagement across key sectors: transport, energy, waste, business, nature-based solutions and buildings.
  • Shetland Net Zero Route Map – Establishes baseline emissions and models emissions reduction pathways across all scopes, highlighting the key role of peatland restoration, renewables, building retrofit, and innovation (e.g. green hydrogen, CCS).
  • Sectoral Partnerships and Strategies – Cross-sector collaborations tackling shared challenges such as energy use, transport decarbonisation, building decarbonisation, land use, resilience and circular economy opportunities.
  • Community Engagement – Building climate literacy and local buy-in through events, workshops, and communications that support inclusive, locally tailored responses.
  • Carbon Literacy and Organisational Leadership – Developing climate-conscious leadership across all Shetland Partnership organisations and embedding climate goals into strategy and delivery.
